Do You Know The Signs of Teen Drug Abuse?

Your son has been acting “a little off.” He’s quite the football team. Maybe your daughter has been more moody than normal. She’s always locked in her room. Of course it must be the hormones, right? Unfortunately, parents, teachers, and trusted adults often miss the signs of teen drug abuse. Depending on the drug, signs may include;

    • Frequent mood swings
    • Isolation
    • Change in school performance or skipping school
    • Dropping out of extracurricular activities
    • Illegal behaviors
    • Depression
    • Slurred speech
    • Unexplained increase or decrease in finances
    • Burns on finger tips or lips

However, communication is key! Talk to your child early and often about drugs and alcohol. If you suspect use, reach out for help. Let them know they are not alone. Teens are often open to treatment when supported.

Has America’s “Opioid Crisis” Invaded Your Home?

It’s almost impossible to turn on the television or scroll your favorite social media site without hearing about “America’s Opioid Crisis”. Opioids are a class of drug that can occur naturally or made by scientists in a lab. Opioids are often prescribed to treat moderate to severe pain and include drugs such as Hydrocodone, Morphine, Fentanyl. An illegal substance, Heroin, is also included in this class (National Institute on Drug Abuse). Becoming addicted to such drugs may start from a simple dentist visit, a sprained ankle, or minor surgery. What happens when these drugs end up in your medicine cabinet? What happens when America’s crisis becomes personal? Addiction changes the dynamics of relationships. Trust, communication, finances, and child-rearing can all be affected. Home can start to feel like a battleground. However, addiction is a disease and help is available. If you, your spouse, or someone you love is struggling with opioid addiction there are several treatment options. Don’t wait another day. Your house can be a home again! Opioids

Opioids are a class of drugs that include the illegal drug heroin, synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, and pain relievers available legally by prescription, such as oxycodone (OxyContin®), hydrocodone (Vicodin®), codeine, morphine, and many others.
All opioids are chemically related and interact with opioid receptors on nerve cells in the body and brain. Opioid pain relievers are generally safe when taken for a short time and as prescribed by a doctor, but because they produce euphoria in addition to pain relief, they can be misused (taken in a different way or in a larger quantity than prescribed, or taken without a doctor’s prescription). Regular use—even as prescribed by a doctor—can lead to dependence and, when misused, opioid pain relievers can lead to addiction, overdose incidents, and deaths. ( National Institute on Drug Abuse).
